Painting

‘Fawn in Technicolor’ Oil paint on 11 × 14” canvas panel with thrifted frame

This last year here, I felt the call to finally try oil paints. It was my first time ever even opening an oil paint tube! For some reason, I just always thought of it as a medium above my skill set, or for more ‘professional’ painters etc. and happily stayed in the acrylics.

There’s definitely been a learning curve and having to learn the process and technicalities of oil paint, paint mediums, paint thinners, the steps and in what order to paint, drying/curing time and all that jazz. It’s forced me to slow down and think through the process of painting first before the brush even touches the canvas. Usually I’m just a whirlwind of ADHD and inspiration chasing thought after thought while painting. So it’s been a good thing, making me be more intentional about really my whole process.

It’s also been a change of gears thinking in a 2D way after doing so much paper mache and sculpting the last few years.

I’ve been loving using Posca markers to lay out the design.

This was also the last painting that I worked on with my Baby Wolf by my side. It was the sweetest thing, he loved when I painted and would sit right behind me. I’d always have to check where he was before I took a step back to get a better look at my painting. I really miss that, but think he’s still with me while painting.
